Artist's
Statement:
Susan Hong-Sammons'
artistry pushes to exemplify the beauty in realism. Her subject matters,
painted in oil from direct observation, are the still life, landscapes,
and the human figure. The foundation and consistent theme behind all
her paintings is to illuminate the beauty in everyday and often overlooked
subjects. Her theme is intensified through the use of chiaroscuro, developing
form from light and shadow. Hong-Sammons explains, "I seek to create
art that goes beyond duplicating reality or merely displaying personal
self-expression. My work is an extension of real space without obviously
dividing art and reality." Her approach reveals the pure poetry
in nature as she creates a meditative response that allows the eye to
travel through her art so that none of the subtleties of painting go
unnoticed.
Ms. Hong-Sammons has exhibited internationally as well as won national
awards and grants. Exhibitions have included the Tokyo Metropolitan
Art Museum, Tokyo, Japan; The Institute of Contemporary Art P.S. 1 Museum,
Artist Space, New York City; The Best and Brightest Exhibition, Scottsdale,
AZ; The 2007 Gold Medal Exhibition, Chicago, IL. She is a recipient
of the Minnesota State Arts Board Grant; received the Excellence in
Arts and Education Award from the National Academy of Alternative Education,
NYC; and was selected as Artist-in-Residence by the prestigious Studio
in a School Association, NYC. Ms. Hong-Sammons holds a Master of Fine
Art from Pratt Institute, NYC.
