Michael Knoch
Michael
Knoch presently lives and works in Greenville, North Carolina. The rural
region provides the current themes for his landscape paintings and drawings.
These recent works depict the coastal waterways, sand beaches, fields,
and brimming woodlands of eastern North Carolina.
His
choice mediums for this subject are color pencil and black ink for the
drawings, and acrylic and watercolor gouache for the paintings. As often
as work is executed on canvas, another is worked on paper. A late Nineteenth
Century palette is the luminous guide for the tone and color values of
many pieces. There is a fine appreciation for the aspect of craft in these
works. Many of his paintings exhibit a finished quality reminiscent of
this era. Michael shows an affinity to the particulars of the watercolor
gouache; an opaque painting formulated and prized in the Victorian century.
The colors are readily brilliant and durable; this medium can certainly
enhance one's collection. "Gouache carries the appropriate qualities
for a contemporary observance of the Nineteenth Century lesson in landscape."
While
Michael signs his paintings on the back using his name, the front image
carries his "symbol" only…a small dot inside a circle. To him,
the small dot represents his small God-given gift of art and self within
the entire universe.
Michael
Knoch received his MFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill in 1993 and BFA from East Carolina University in 1983. |
