Kevin Fitzgerald

Kevin Fitzgerald has been painting for over thirty years.  Born in Washington, DC in 1953, it became apparent from early childhood that he was drawn to painting.  He started taking drawing classes at the Corcoran School of Art in 1970 during his high school career.  He attended the Maryland Institute, College of Art, receiving his BFA in 1977.
Fitzgerald began work on his MFA under full fellowship at George Washington University in Washington, DC.  During this time he restored a fifty-four foot barge, converting it into a floating studio.  He completed his graduate studies while making paintings on the Patuxent River and surrounding Southern Maryland landscapes, and graduated in 1982.
Fitzgerald’s interest in painting is rooted in the works of masters from the 15th to the 20th century and their relationships to current forms.  The artist has participated in numerous one person and group shows and has the honor of having his work included in private collections throughout the United States, Canada, England and Germany.
Fitzgerald resides with and is inspired by his wife, Wendy, and their four children on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

Excerpted from the book Kevin Fitzgerald Selected Works

“…His mysterious landscapes are not easily described in visual terms alone.  When experienced firsthand, they often elicit a sense of awe.  The observer realizes instantly that these paintings are created by an artist and an intellect whose mind and creativity go beyond the normal, everyday depictions of the world around us.
Good painting, like good poetry, is the ideal imitation of human action.  The Roman poet Horace (65-8 BC) wrote the well-known simile ut pictura poesis, which was invoked as painting is mute poetry, poetry a speaking picture.  The meaning is “as is painting, so is poetry,” which later Renaissance writers interpreted to be “as is poetry, so is painting.”  This Renaissance concept comes to mind with Fitzgerald’s mysterious yet poetic and harmonious paintings…
Visitors to a converted barn that serves as his studio cannot escape the large words that Fitzgerald has written on the wall:  “vastness, mystery, silence, inevitability,” as well as the Latin “veritas, claritas, nobilitas.”  One realizes even more that this artist has a philosophical approach to life, which is reflected in his artistic creations…”
